I kind of miss August
An embarrassing confession (but I guess not so embarrassing since I'm writing about it). Plus a secret discount code!
I know August is already old news—it’s already been September for almost two weeks now (horrifying, isn’t it?). August is the time of year that the news gets particularly stupid. And just try to utter the words, “August in Washington DC” and not involuntarily shudder. But historically August has been a good month for me. It’s the anniversary of me landing an agent (Agent Day!) and becoming friends with a couple of my favorite people (Friendship Day!) which I always try to celebrate. It’s a pressure-free month, when expectations are gloriously low.
Last August I organized a Lazy Triathlon with a few friends, which I’d like to think embodied the spirit of the month. The problem with triathlons, in my opinion, is that they take three very pleasurable activities (biking, swimming and running1) and make them tedious and competitive. A Lazy Triathlon is a leisurely five mile downhill bike ride, then a 3-ish mile walk-run to the pool, where you can plunge in the water after working up a sweat. The route took a little planning, plus my trusty hydration vest, and overall I’d consider it a success.
Drawing-wise, I’ve been getting really into a Fish Doing Things series, which strikes the right balance of silly and…well, I’m not sure what other word to use here? Nautical? Quotidien? Piscine? A less-pretentious word that also means “of and relating to fish?”
I decided I didn’t care for the Jumping the Shark image, and replaced it with a fish going to therapy. Somehow every night for the past week I’ve been drawing a new one. There’s always something a little wrong with each therapy fish, which means that I feel obliged to try again:
